MacParsley

The Recording tab

Settings → Recording controls how MacParsley records your calls, which outside services it works with, and the permissions it needs. It has five sections.

Meeting Detection

Meeting Detection and Meeting Apps Behavior

SettingWhat it does
Notice when a meeting startsMacParsley sees when Zoom, Teams, Webex or Slack is in a call. It only looks at whether an app is using audio, and never listens until you say so.
Show MacParsley in the menu barThe small icon that shows and controls recording.
Open MacParsley when I log inStarts the app at login so calls are never missed.

Meeting Apps Behavior

For each of Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Webex and Slack, choose:

  • Record Automatically: starts the moment the call's audio begins.
  • Ask Before Recording: a notification with Record and Not Now.
  • Don't Record.

Recording stops by itself when the call has been quiet for a while. See Recording for what is captured.

Third Party Integrations

Third Party Integrations

Each row has a switch and a Configure… button (Configure is available once the switch is on). Switching Plaud, Pocket or Fireflies on adds it to the Source list in the Import window; switching it off removes it there. Audio Storage has only a button.

Plaud

Configure… opens a sheet with:

  • Sign In… (and Sign Out): your browser opens Plaud's sign-in page. MacParsley never sees your password. The sheet then shows Signed in as … with a green check, and checks it again each time you open it.
  • What to bring over: audio (always), Transcript (Original or Cleaned up by Plaud), Summary (Text only or With images), Highlights, and Replace Plaud's Title with MacParsley Generated Title.
  • Summary images: to bring pictures over, or to have Plaud transcribe and summarize meetings from your Mac, sign in to Plaud's website here too.

Details: Plaud and Pocket.

Pocket

Pocket settings

Configure… opens a sheet with:

  • API key: paste a key made in Pocket under Settings → Developer → API Keys. The sheet shows Connected as NAME (Plan plan). To use Pocket to transcribe or summarize, the key needs write access (recordings:write).
  • What to bring over: audio (always), Transcript, Summary, and Replace Pocket's Title with MacParsley Generated Title.

Details: Plaud and Pocket.

Fireflies

Configure… opens a sheet with:

  • The Fireflies form: API key (Connected as …, and a check that the plan can upload audio), the Replace Fireflies' title… option, the extra sections to add to every summary, and the Cloud storage to use.
  • When importing meetings from Fireflies, bring over: audio (always, Pro plan or higher), Transcript and Summary.

Using Fireflies as the engine or the summarizer is chosen in Settings → Summaries. Details: Fireflies.ai.

Audio Storage

Set Up… (or Configure…) opens a window with a list of S3-compatible services (Cloudflare R2, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, others). Each keeps its own endpoint, region, bucket and keys, a Test Connection button and Remove audio after processing. A service that's set up shows a green check. This is the place MacParsley leaves a recording for a few minutes while Fireflies downloads it. Details: Audio storage.

Plaud, Pocket and note1 don't need storage: the audio goes straight to them.

Recording

SettingWhat it does
Save toThe folder and tags every automatically recorded meeting gets.
Show a recording window with a live transcriptA small always-on-top window with the levels and a live transcript while a call is recorded.
Cancel echo when I'm on speakersWhen both your microphone and the call's audio are recorded and you listen on speakers, takes the other side out of your microphone so it isn't recorded twice. MacParsley compares your microphone with what the Mac plays, so it works with any microphone. Headphones still give the cleanest result.
Also keep the microphone on its ownFor checking the echo cancellation: each recording also saves your cleaned microphone as a separate file in MacParsley's Echo Tests folder (Show Folder), named for the recording. Listen to it while the other side talks: ideally you hear nothing but yourself.

Only the meeting app's own audio is recorded, not music or other sounds on your Mac. Recordings go through the usual steps: transcript, speakers, title and summary (on your Mac, or at a service if you've chosen one in Settings → Summaries). The Record Meeting window has the same echo option under the name Echo Cancellation.

Permissions

Recording and Permissions

Each shows a green check or a red cross, with Allow… or Open Settings… to fix it:

PermissionWhy
MicrophoneYour side of the call.
System Audio RecordingThe meeting app's sound.
NotificationsTo ask before recording, and to tell you a meeting was saved.

MacParsley needs the microphone and System Audio Recording to record a meeting. Recording other people can require their consent where you live; meeting apps don't announce a recording MacParsley makes.
